When I preach on a painful topic, I always say, “Remember, I love you.” This is such a topic and this article comes from a heart of love and a desire to correct error for the protection of believers and unbelievers alike.

“God is love.” This is a very true statement from the Bible itself. (1 John 4:16) God also gets angry and hates. Here are just a few verses on what God hates.

“You shall not behave thus toward the LORD your God, for every abominable act which the LORD hates they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.” Deuteronomy 12:31

“The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked, and the one who loves violence His soul hates.” Psalm 11:5

“There are six things which the LORD hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:” Proverbs 6:16

“Just as it is written, “JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED.” Romans 9:13

Our topic is not what God hates but what angers Him. So, why does He get angry? God is perfect and man was created in a perfect and sinless state. When man fell to temptation and ignored His command in the garden and followed another master, then this provoked God to anger with Adam and Eve. They had offended Him by allowing Satan to usurp His rightful position and authority. His honor, holiness and absolute word had been blatantly disregarded. Just like a parent, it is possible to love someone completely and yet to be angry with them and to bring correction to them. This does not mean that we stop loving our children but our anger over an offense has taken priority over our love for the moment. A wrong must be made right and then the love is brought back to the forefront. This is the loving thing to do with our children and He with His children. And like parents, He has every right to become angry when His creation offends Him. This anger remains until there is confession, repentance and forsaking that sin.

In the unbelieving, God’s anger is constant with them as the reason for His anger has not been dealt with. Once an unbeliever becomes a believer and repents of his sin and turns away from it to follow God in obedience, then God’s love could not be more awesome to him. With His children, his anger lasts until repentance is shown and forgiveness is accomplished

A few years ago someone came up with a saying that was trying to give God an excuse for the times God is angry with people. He doesn’t need our help, He can take care of Himself! This is a new and not biblically correct saying that is being presented in sermons today. The saying goes, “God is not angry with you, He loves you!” This dodges the fact that God is angry with sin and sinners and it gives a sinner the false impression that no matter what he or she does, God is ok with that. He’s NOT! God is never ok with

sin since all sin is an affront to Him. Not telling sinners of God’s anger with them is only telling them half of the gospel. The love of God will not save them but the forgiveness of God at the repentance of sinners will. The most important response to this new mantra is found in John 3:18 and 36. It speaks of the expected result for those who receive God’s forgiveness for their sins and those who refuse to do so. Anger is turned away from those who do and it remains on those who refuse. It hasn’t gone away and won’t until sin is dealt with according to God’s word. God delights in showing mercy to those who are willing to turn from their sin. Those who refuse stay in the same state as they have been and His wrath abides on them. God does not delight in the death of sinners.

“Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked,” declares the Lord GOD, “rather than that he should turn from his ways and live?”

Ezekiel 19:23

“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:18

This prevents God’s love from flowing into the life of a sinner. His love is there but it is blocked until the offense is dealt with.

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” John 3:36

The idea in the Greek is that His wrath constantly abides on him. So this new saying is totally wrong and must be avoided in our preaching.

(An important note: A sinner is one who deliberately disobeys God but the Christian is seen as sinful not a sinner. A believer may fall into temptation and commit sin but his heart draws him to confess and repent of the sin quickly. The sinner refuses to admit his sin and chooses to do what pleases himself.)

When the Bible mentions that God is angry we must remember that His anger is never sinful anger but anger because His word is being violated or His person is being dishonored. Man’s anger can fall into two categories, sinful or righteous indignation. When man is defending someone who has been wronged it is possible that the person is righteously indignant with the person and is not sinful anger. Sinful anger comes from a bitter or hateful attitude or a desire to get even with the person who has wronged us or another. God’s desire is to help man to be at peace with Himself and with each other. Reconciliation is therefore to be man’s ultimate goal in dealing with people. This is getting right, not getting even.

When man offends God’s righteousness by violating His word, He rightfully gets angry with the person. The following categories and related verses will demonstrate this clearly. This is in no way covers all the areas of what angers God but is a representative coverage of some.

Like the last article, trying to dodge this part of who God is becomes just another attempt to make God a soft cuddly grandfather type. God is like a diamond, He has many facets and anger is one of those facets. Anger is a very real facet of His person and rightly so. Are you offended when someone sins against you? If they lie to you, or cheat you, or harm your family this would offend anyone who desires what is right.

“Then the earth shook and quaked; and the foundations of the mountains were trembling and were shaken, because He was angry.” Psalm 18:7

This is pretty powerful anger!

God is angry about man changing His word to suit himself. God has maintained His word in a pure state in spite of man’s efforts to destroy it.

“Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it.” Deuteronomy 12:32

“Do not add to His words or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar.” Proverbs 30:6

“I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.” Revelation 22:18-19

These last two verses are part of the last three verses in the Bible revelation. The sampling of verses from many parts of the Bible is to prevent someone from trying to weasel out of taking these verses literally by saying that the one in Revelation are specifically for the book of Revelation. God’s Word is from Genesis through Revelation and none of it is to be edited in any way by man.

One of the most horrific things to come along in a long time is the Reader’s Digest version of the Bible. What parts do you leave out in order to reduce its size? The following quote is from a web site promoting this version or should I say, this perversion?

“Early on, it was decided that some of the better known passages as the 10 Commandments, the 23rd Psalm, the Lord’s Prayer, and other familiar passages would remain untouched while the rest of the Biblical text was significantly shortened.”

This is a direct violation of the verses that I quoted at the beginning. Would you be angry if you wrote a book that said just exactly what you wanted it to say and that it was all essential to communicating your thoughts and you heard that someone had published a condensed version of it?

God says that it is the perfect size already and He does not want any human being adding to it or taking away from it. No wonder He is angry!

One of my professors always said, “I have no patience with people who take the scalpel to the Word of God.”

There have been efforts over the years to condense the Bible but none has made any headway. People, not always the so-called scholars, know that the Bible cannot be shortened. Most people have a high respect for the Bible even if they don’t believe it but not so with so-called higher criticism folks. These men set about to tear down anything they can. I got so frustrated with these folks in seminary that I felt like screaming! One of these professor tried to interpret all the miracles in the Bible in a naturalistic way. He taught that the parting of the Jordan River was nothing more than a landslide upstream. That would take a lot of mud! You see, the Jordan, at the time of crossing, was at flood stage and was overflowing its banks. The time it would take for two to three million people to cross it would have caused the river to overflow any landslide. He had many others that I will not deal with here. I was a young student of the Bible and yet I knew that his teaching was bogus and so we debated a lot while I was under his teaching. The seminary finally severed him and I was glad that other students would not be subjected to such nonsense. Tragically, many seminary teachers today are teaching heresy to their students and so this heresy gets transferred to the local churches. I read an article not long ago that laid out many of these bogus teachings. They ranged from creation to the virgin birth to the resurrection and second coming of Jesus. Some say that the virgin birth was not essential to the birth of Jesus. This is a lie! Without the virgin birth, Jesus would be just another human being rather than the God-man that He is. God is His Father, not Joseph! When will the Word of God be taken at face value and not interpreted to suit our biases? This is evil and it makes God very angry.

God is angry with man’s sexual perversion.

God set the standards in creation and man has tried to change this from the earliest days until today.

“And the LORD said, ‘The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave.’ ” Genesis 18:20

“Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven, and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD; and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the valley, and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a furnace.” Genesis 19:24-28

The Bible says that before this judgment the Jordan valley was like the garden of God but afterwards it was turned into a waste land.

Adultery was dealt with decisively also.

“But if this charge is true, that the girl was not found a virgin, then they shall bring out the girl to the doorway of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death because she has committed an act of folly in Israel by playing the harlot in her father’s house; thus you shall purge the evil from among you. If a man is found lying with a married woman, then both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel.” Deuteronomy 22:20-22

Today, many preachers and teachers try to take away the consequences of people’s sins by our distorted interpretation of Scripture so as to forgive what God says is an abomination. At one time, the Catholic church sold indulgences. This is sort of a get out of jail free card for cash. God alone can forgive sins and here we must stick to the letter of the word. Let conviction and God’s anger do their work in the sinner’s heart. When a spouse divorces his or her mate for any reason other than adultery, Jesus said that adultery is being committed by the offending party. This is an area that is

just being dismissed without trying to bring reconciliation of the spouses. We must choose whether we will follow the Word of God or our own emotional feelings.

God is angry with people who discourage His people from obedience or who cause His children to stumble.

“Now why are you discouraging the sons of Israel from crossing over into the land which the LORD has given them? This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the sons of Israel so that they did not go into the land which the LORD had given them. So the LORD’S anger burned in that day, and He swore, saying, ‘None of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob; for they did not follow Me fully, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have followed the LORD fully.’ So the LORD’S anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the entire generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the LORD was destroyed.” Numbers 32:7-13

“And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!” Matthew 18:5-7

God is angry with His people who try to weasel out of obeying His will.

I have heard a number of men say to me over the years, “I can’t afford to go into the pastoral ministry. I’ve become accustomed to a certain lifestyle.” Sad! These men will never experience the pleasure of God on their lives and they will live in perpetual disobedience toward God. This is refusing His call on your life and this brings the anger of the Lord. Look what happened to Jonah when he went away from the will of God.

Moses tried everything to weasel out of going to Egypt to deliver God’s people from brutal slavery. The last straw came in the following verse. Moses finally consented to go.

“Then the anger of the LORD burned against Moses, and He said, ‘Is there not your brother Aaron the Levite? I know that he speaks fluently. And moreover, behold, he is coming out to meet you; when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.” Exodus 4:14

Moses finally consented when the Lord sent Aaron with him to Egypt.

The case with Balaam was very similar. He persisted in ignoring God’s instruction each time Balaam approached Him. He should have called it good the first time around.

“God said to Balaam, ‘Do not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.’ ” Numbers 22:12

“So Balaam arose in the morning, and saddled his donkey and went with the leaders of Moab. But God was angry because he was going, and the angel of the LORD took his stand in the way as an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey and his two servants were with him.”

Numbers 22:21-22

Balaam ended up being killed with the sword when Israel attacked the Midianites. Balaam was still living with them. Because of this, it cost him his life.

“They killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of their slain: Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian; they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.” Numbers 31:8

God is angry with His people when they whine and complain.

“Now the people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of the LORD; and when the LORD heard it, His anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.” Numbers 11:1

“While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very severe plague.” Numbers 11:33

God is very angry with His people when they try and have their way against His anointed servant.

This goes on every day in churches where deacons or elders try and call the shots that the pastor alone is to call. The pastor is the highest authority in the local church. He is called by God to this high calling. Trying to dominate this man of God is a vicious evil in today’s church. No deacon or elder is to try and control the church or its God called pastor. Look at 2nd John and see this in action. This will be further dealt with in another article sometime. See how God dealt with Miriam and Aaron in the following passage.

“Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married (for he had married a Cushite woman); and they said, ‘Has the LORD indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?’ And the LORD heard it. (Now the man Moses was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.) Suddenly the LORD said to Moses and Aaron and to Miriam, ‘You three come out to the tent of meeting.’ So the three of them came out. Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the doorway of the tent, and He called Aaron and Miriam. When they had both come forward, He said, ‘Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, shall make Myself known to him in a vision. I shall speak with him in a dream. Not so, with My servant Moses, he is faithful in all My household; with him I speak mouth to mouth, even openly, and not in dark sayings, and he beholds the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant, against Moses?’ So the anger of the LORD burned

against them and He departed. But when the cloud had withdrawn from over the tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. As Aaron turned toward Miriam, behold, she was leprous.” Numbers 12:1-10

“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.” Hebrews 13:17

This goes without saying that the pastor must be seeking God’s face and His will in daily private prayer. Pastors who do not know the will of God from spending time with Him but seeking to plug in their own ideas have brought about ruin to local churches. We have seen some of these train wrecks over the past few years. There is no place for self-willed men in God’s pulpit.

“Cursed be the one who does the LORD’S work negligently…”

Jeremiah 48:10

The right attitude is always, “Not my will but Your will be done.” Note what the Bible says about men of God who were greatly used by Him. They were humble, obedient and totally committed to finding and doing the will of their Father. Power without restraint is an evil thing as many of the kings of Israel demonstrate.

God is angry when His people are disobedient to Him.

“For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.” Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.” Hebrews 3:16-4:2

The Lord is angry with His people who take the gifts from His hand and then turn away and serve other so-called gods.

“Now the LORD was angry with Solomon because his heart was turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice, and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods; but he did not observe what the LORD had commanded.”

1 Kings 11:9-10

“Yet you have not listened to Me,” declares the LORD, “in order that you might provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.”

Jeremiah 25:7

“Because they have forsaken Me and have burned incense to other gods that they might provoke Me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore My wrath burns against this place, and it shall not be quenched.”‘

2 Kings 22:17

“As for the message that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we are not going to listen to you! But rather we will certainly carry out every word that has proceeded from our mouths, by burning sacrifices to the

queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, just as we ourselves, our forefathers, our kings and our princes did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then we had plenty of food and were well off and saw no misfortune. But since we stopped burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have met our end by the sword and by famine. And, said the women, when we were burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and were pouring out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands that we made for her sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out drink offerings to her?” Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men and women–even to all the people who were giving him such an answer–saying, “As for the smoking sacrifices that you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your forefathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them and did not all this come into His mind? So the LORD was no longer able to endure it, because of the evil of your deeds, because of the abominations which you have committed; thus your land has become a ruin, an object of horror and a curse, without an inhabitant, as it is this day. Because you have burned sacrifices and have sinned against the LORD and not obeyed the voice of the LORD or walked in His law, His statutes or His testimonies, therefore this calamity has befallen you, as it has this day.” Jeremiah 44:16-23

Today, the false gods of money, sex, power, fame, position, and materialism are very prevalent. These idols are the biggest distraction to the lost people of the world, hindering them from finding God’s plan for their lives. These have become more and more pervasive in the church today and are diverting resources and manpower inwardly to selfish goals. “Wealthy Christian” is a misnomer as God gives us money to give to His causes around the world. The gift of giving is given to persons who will become a channel of blessing to God’s kingdom. They get and can’t wait to pass it on to worthy purposes of God’s choosing. Hoarding money is never acceptable. Be careful of passing judgment on others here. I know some well off believers who are greatly generous to the things of God. The Name It and Claim It preachers live in opulence and brag that they have it when most of it comes from widows on a fixed income. (Research shows that 75% of their income comes from these widows.) Many of these TV preachers speak and write about Jesus’ designer clothes, his fancy home etc. These statements are total lies in order to deceive people to send them even more money. How many of these preachers have been found out when money they collected for orphans in some foreign country was not sent but kept by themselves. They brag of driving Bentleys, Rolls Royce’s and other high dollar cars while hunger and disease runs rampant around the world. God will deal with this in the end.

So, what was the source of Jesus’ support? Did He have bank accounts and designer clothes? The designer clothing thing is totally made up as they had no such thing in Jesus’ day. All of His servants had barely enough to get by. Look at Paul, Peter, John and others for the proof of this. Read the life of Hudson Taylor to see this continued to today’s world.

“Soon afterwards, He began going around from one city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means.” Luke 8:1-3

These ladies were most likely making things and selling them so as to give them support. Women did not have the option of getting a job in the public square. They did not have the rights women enjoy today. By the way ladies, don’t thank the government for your rights but thank Jesus Christ and His church for your freedom. Further reading on this topic, “What If Jesus Had Never Been Born” by D. James Kennedy will blow your minds.

Jesus Himself made it clear about His financial situation.

“And Jesus said to him, ‘The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Luke 9:58

We have to rationalize our way into keeping what the Lord gives to us rather than sharing it with genuine needs. It really demonstrates our lack of faith that God will meet our needs if we do. The old saying that we cannot out give God is true. Faith is tested and is grown when we give beyond our means. Always pray about what and how much you give. Don’t give out of guilt or some sob story you hear. Find out what is behind it all.

“There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: riches being hoarded by their owner to his hurt.” Ecclesiastes 5:13 I am not speaking of what it takes to live in the world but the excesses. Why are we so caught up with brand name identity? A Lexus is nothing more than a glorified Toyota. An Infinity is the same as the Nissan. They are made by the same company. Look at the body style of the top Toyota and Nissan and see the similar lines. Isn’t it just selfishness that makes us buy more car, more house and more of many other things rather than to being conservative and have money to give to Kingdom work?

Haven’t we had enough TBN scandals already? Yet they continue their deception daily as they waste air time talking about wealth and pledge campaigns rather than sending the pure Gospel around the world. God is angry with people who use His name to take money from the poor to feed their own greedy desires. When will Christians stop sending them money? The next time one of them asks you for money with the get rich scheme of, ‘send me $100.00 and God will send you $1,000.00,’ then write to them and tell them to send you $100.00 and God will give them $1,000.00. They will soon be off the air and legitimate preachers and teachers will take their place. There are presently godly preachers and teachers on Christian television but they are outnumbered by the schemers. Let me hasten to say that I detest the sin but love the brother or sister. I pray for them and this keeps my frustration from becoming a root of bitterness. Without this, we become hypocrites. It is a hard task to correct error as it is easy to condemn the man and wind up in sin ourselves. Please pray for me as I try and fulfill God’s calling on my life in restoring His church to biblical standards.

(This is very much a hot button issue with me if you could not tell this already. I hate it when God’s people are ripped off in His name!)

The Lord is angry when His people turn a deaf ear to His voice.

“So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, ‘Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers and has not listened to My voice…’ ” Judges 2:20

“To whom shall I speak and give warning that they may hear? Behold, their ears are closed and they cannot listen. Behold, the word of the LORD has become a reproach to them; they have no delight in it.” Jeremiah 6:10

God is angry when man treats Him without respect.

“And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down there for his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God.”

2 Samuel 6:7

“Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. Then Moses said to Aaron, ‘It is what the LORD spoke, saying,

“By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, and before all the people I will be honored.” ‘ So Aaron, therefore, kept silent.” Leviticus 10:1-3

God is angry when His people crave for and take for themselves that which He has forbidden.

“But the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully in regard to the things under the ban, for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the things under the ban, therefore the anger of the LORD burned against the sons of Israel.” Joshua 7:1

“Then Joshua and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the mantle, the bar of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent and all that belonged to him; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor. Joshua said, ‘Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you this day.’ And all Israel stoned them with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones. They raised over him a great heap of stones that stands to this day, and the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the valley of Achor to this day.” Joshua 7:24-26

“For I know that after my death you will act corruptly and turn from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days, for you will do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger with the work of your hands.” Deuteronomy 31:29

It amazes me that there are so many professed believers who live daily in open sin. How can these folks shack up with someone else without a marriage license? How can they tell open lies in business and think that they worship God on Sundays? How can gossips spin their poison and claim Him as Lord? The list could go on and on but time and space prevent this. I fear for these folks as I seriously question whether they have ever really given their lives to the Lord.

“Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you–unless indeed you fail the test?” 2 Corinthians 13:5

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, (sex before marriage) nor idolaters, nor adulterers, (sex with someone other than your husband or wife) nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

You were if you are genuinely His child. It is possible to ‘pray the prayer’ and still be lost! Please read the last article to get a better perspective on this. God wants you to be His child. He does not want you to live in sin and shame. If you need more answers, please write to me and I will do all I can to help you. No matter what your sin is now He can and will set you free and make you His child forever. You will then have the power to resist temptation and live a life that is pleasing to Him.

God is angry with man’s efforts to prove Him wrong.

“They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Get up and come forward!’ And He said to them, ‘Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?’ But they kept silent. After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.” Mark 3:2-5

Finally, God is angry with people who seal their fate by taking the mark of the beast.

“Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, ‘If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name. Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.’ ” Revelation 14:9-12

This is a very serious matter. For an article on this please check my web site and look for the article on this issue.

Final instruction on human anger and how to keep it from becoming sinful. These verses are full of commands, not suggestions. Will we obey or continue to do what pleases us?

“But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.” Colossians 3:8

“This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.” James 1:19-20

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.” Ephesians 4:31

“Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Galatians 5:19-24

Which set is evident in our lives? Deeds of the flesh or Fruit of the Spirit? A little check up is necessary.

These are but a few of the biblical answers to our question about what makes God angry. His anger is turned away when man is willing to admit he is wrong, ask Him to forgive them based on the gospel and forsake their sin to follow Him only. Lordship is not an afterthought or optional. It is an essential and is demonstrated by our obedience to His will and commands.

“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say.” Luke 6:46

“Transgression speaks to the ungodly within his heart; there is no fear of God before his eyes.” Psalm 36:1

“O fear the LORD, you His saints; for to those who fear Him there is no want.” Psalm 34:9

“He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many will see and fear and will trust in the LORD.” Psalm 40:3

“Then you will discern the fear of the LORD and discover the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:5

It is very important to God that His people fear/reverence Him. These passages make it clear that the ungodly has no fear of God as he doesn’t even know Him. There is a promise of met needs to His saints who fear Him. In evangelism, as David notes in his Psalm, salvation brings the fear of the Lord and trust because they fear. Lastly, He promises His children that we will discern or understand the fear of the Lord and with it He tells us that we will then discover the knowledge of the Lord. The following proverb makes this even clearer.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7

When mankind comes to fear/revere the LORD, then knowledge comes concerning who God is and everything He has made. It goes on to say that fools despise wisdom and instruction. This is why those who do not know God immediately react when we speak to them about God. They refuse even to listen to what we have to say. The Bible says the fool has said in his heart that there is no God. Romans chapter one tells us the end result of this line of thinking: futility and darkness. Evidently, there are a lot of fools in the world today because a lot of folks refuse to bow the knee to Him in worship. Many of these fools will speak of God when it is to their advantage, such as many politicians, but in reality give Him no credence at all. It’s funny how even atheists blame God when things go wrong.

God clearly spells out the benefits and consequences of having or not having this reverential awe for God.

What inspires awe in you? A massive waterfall, harvest colors of the forest, a storm at sea, a hurricane or tornado, the universe? Awe inspiring things make us weak kneed and brings a palpitating heart. When men encountered God in Scripture, they fell on their faces and shook at the fear of being in His presence.

Most of today’s preaching has so overemphasized the love, mercy, grace and kindness of God that people have no fear/reverential awe for Him because they have not been taught how to or why they should fear Him.

I am very proud of the young pastor who stepped into my shoes when I retired as pastor because of health problems. He often speaks to the issues I

refer to in this article and has a deep personal reverence for God and His word. He, in his youth, has learned to fear/reverence the LORD and this will be his greatest asset as a pastor since this will lead him to his knees in prayer, make him plumb the depths of God’s word and teach the people the whole counsel of God without soft pedaling it.

Charles Finney of the Second Great Awakening in America once said, “If you fear man you fear not God.” That pretty well sums it all up. Pastors who fear offending people with all of who God is and what He does are termed ‘ear tickling’ preachers according to Scripture. They would rather keep the big crowd by telling them the things they want to hear rather than to risk laying out the truth as God lays it on the heart of the preacher. Notice the broad range of what Scripture is to accomplish in people’s lives including the preacher.

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.” 2 Timothy 3:16-4:4

These teachers are like chameleons who change color according to the audience they have. I have seen this first hand. If they speak to a preacher’s conference, they bring out their bold sermon, but if it is a church service, they bring out the soft and non-offensive sermon. What will a man do to keep the crowd coming back next Sunday?

Have you noted that today’s church is built on Sunday attendance? All of the horsepower is applied to making this service wonderful. Go to these large churches on a Wednesday evening and you will see a very small crowd in attendance and often the message is something they just threw together without much content. The Willow Creek model emphasizes the weekend service is for ‘seekers’ and the mid-week is for ‘believers.’ I think that this is the model Jesus used with the crowds who came to hear him, right? Wrong! He spoke to every crowd the life changing message from His heart. What happens to believers when there is no mid-week Bible study? What if the content is so weak that believers choose not to waste their time with it? Wednesday night attendance is a great measuring stick for the effectiveness of any church. Do we prepare as intensely for this service, make sure the music is just as inspiring as Sunday’s music and release the people saying, “It was truly good to have been here?”

Just note these verses from the Minor Prophets. Countless other passages could be used to illustrate the fear or lack of fear of the LORD. Remember, terms used to tell us about God are often the emotions we as humans experience. We must remember that there is absolutely no sin in God’s person so jealousy is not like human jealousy but a passion to protect those betrothed to Him in spiritual marriage. This is the picture of God that rarely makes the Sunday message.

“The oracle of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. A jealous and avenging God is the LORD; the LORD is avenging and wrathful. The LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for His enemies. The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. In whirlwind and storm is His way, and clouds are the dust beneath His feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; He dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither; the blossoms of Lebanon wither. Mountains quake because of Him and the hills dissolve; indeed the earth is upheaved by His presence, the world and all the inhabitants in it. Who can stand before His indignation? Who can endure the burning of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire and the rocks are broken up by Him. The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who take refuge in Him. But with an overflowing flood He will make a complete end of its site, and will pursue His enemies into darkness.” Nahum 1:1-7

“For behold, the LORD is coming forth from His place. He will come down and tread on the high places of the earth. The mountains will melt under Him and the valleys will be split, like wax before the fire, like water poured down a steep place.” Micah 1:3-4

God is awesome beyond our wildest description yet with man’s repentance, turning away from his sin, He freely gives Himself to pardon and mercy. Man is no longer His enemy buy becomes His child and friend.

“Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in unchanging love. He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. You will give truth to Jacob and unchanging love to Abraham, which You swore to our forefathers from the days of old.” Micah 7:18-20

This is the whole story of the cross of Jesus. God’s wrath remains on every human being on earth who has not found shelter in Jesus and His covering for sin. If preachers don’t tell people about this wrath, how will they know how to turn it away? His wrath is there because man’s sins offend this holy God. Think of walking into someone’s living room after having fallen into the sewer. Would you offend your friends with your stench? This is how it is with God. Our sins make us odious to God. We are unclean before Him. Remember what happened with Adam and Eve? Before sin, God came every evening to walk and talk with them, but when they offended Him by their disobedience, He no longer came to them but cast them out of the garden and they were cursed with specific hardships until they would recognize that they had offended their friend and that they owed Him an apology. An apology is no good if the person goes out and does it again. There must be a change of behavior. True repentance toward God brings His power to live above sin if we are willing to discipline ourselves and choose obedience over selfish gratification. Repentance is an essential to true salvation. Turning away from our offensive, sinful lifestyle and turning to a life that is pleasing to God is the sign of genuine salvation. To these, the Great White Throne judgment is no longer an issue. The wrath that was on them has

been removed and replaced with love, mercy and grace. Note the following verses and how the word ‘obey’ is a part of it all.

“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

John 3:18, 36

Many teachers today say that Lordship is a separate thing from salvation. In reality, it is the other side of the same coin. There is no salvation without lordship and no lordship without salvation. Another exit strategy is carnality in the Christian life. The Scriptures are clear that if a person continues to sin as before, he/she never really came to know Him.

“By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps (obeys) His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.” 1 John 2:3-6

“Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.” 1 John 2:15-17

Materialism is not a part of God’s will for His children. He promises to meet our needs, not our wants. We spend far too much of God’s money on personal comfort and pleasure while our brothers and sisters around the world are going without necessary food, clothing and shelter.

“Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him. Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.”

1 John 3:4-10

The last verse is most critical. Paul strongly urges each person in Corinth to put their salvation to the test.” Galatians 4:9-11

Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you–unless indeed you fail the test?” 2 Corinthians 13:5

This is a lot of verses but the point is vital and sadly much ignored in today’s preaching and teaching.

Believing in Jesus is far more than just buying fire insurance or accepting certain facts about Him. The Hebrews consistently translate the word believe as trust or trusting. It is like knowing that to escape disaster you must pass through a wall of fire. Those who put their trust in Jesus have Him as a shelter or shield to protect them from certain destruction as they pass through the fire. Those who refuse Him face the fire without protection and ultimately are consumed. God is a consuming fire yet those who have come to know the Father, Son and Spirit enter into an eternal covenant with Him. We literally become one with Him spiritually. He delivers us from the wrath that is inevitable when God judges those who refuse Him. Jesus took away the sins of all human beings when He died on the cross and left just one sin that man had to deal with. Just to show you this, here it is.

“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin (singular) and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me…” John 16:8-9

That choice is to believe or not to believe. It remains for man to trust God’s word that He has made a way of escape or to reject His protection and face the fire alone. The ultimate end of every person who refuses Him is that he or she be cast into the lake of fire for all eternity. The truth is that no one has to be thrown in there. The truth is that God sends no one to Hell/lake of fire. They literally choose to go there because of their own rejection of His of free gift of forgiveness and eternal life. They literally condemn themselves by doing nothing about God’s offer of forgiveness.

What a disaster awaits those who refuse to put their trust in Jesus. Note the fact of judgment in these verses. The ‘dead’ refers to those who are spiritually dead before God because they have not trusted Jesus for salvation. The word salvation means deliverance. One is delivered from the horrible consequences of God’s wrath because his sin is forgiven.

“Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:12-15

The Jehovah’s Witnesses try to use this passage to prove that no person is cast into the lake of fire but they always leave the last verse out in their presentation. “If anyone’s name was not found written … he was thrown into the lake of fire.” Every time I have shown this to them they always have to admit that people are cast into the fire.

You get your name written in His book when you become a member of God’s forever family.

I am so saddened to look at atheist web sites and see how they will do anything to try and prove that God doesn’t exist. Just this week I noted the quotes of our founding fathers, taken out of context, in order to try and make them atheists. One of their captions read, “I think we have won the battle.” How sad, win the battle through falsehood and lose the war and their eternal soul. It proves their inability to defend their positions when they provide no way of sending feedback to them. They simply throw out falsehood and expect people to fall for it. People who are looking for an excuse to reject God do buy these lies.

For those who have put their trust in Jesus, perfect love floods the heart and soul and fear of death and eternity are cast away. This is an awesome truth. When man lives in the fear/reverential awe of God he no longer fears man, death or things that can harm him. Yet, no matter how much hype the man who does not reverence God has, he lives in fear. He wears tee shirts that say, “No Fear,” but in the pit of his stomach he is gripped with all kinds of fears/phobias. This next verse says it all for the one who reverences God. God’s perfect love fills the believer’s life and he now lives loving, obeying and doing things that please his Heavenly Father. This verse deals with things and people that man fears, not the fear of the LORD. The believer retains the fear/reverence of the Lord.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.”

1 John 4:18

“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1

The decision by pastors and teachers to avoid teaching everything about God leaves people feeling that God is powerless, too loving and kind to do anything to them anyway. This is the absolute worst assumption a human can make.

You may be reading this and fear has gripped you deep inside. This is a good thing. This is the fear/reverence of God working in your heart and it is making you aware of your desperate situation apart from God. He now waits for you to admit your past rejection of Him and His forgiveness, your decision to turn your back on your sin and to make God the only object of your love, obedience and worship. Do it now. Just speak to God and tell Him of your awareness that you stand condemned in your sin, your decision for forsake your sins and to put your trust in His Son’s death and resurrection which takes away man’s sins. If you have further questions on this please hit reply and let me know. I would be very happy to answer your questions.
